Mountains and hiking
Born 100 million years ago
The mountain peaks you see at Chandolin were once level with the surrounding land. It took almost 100 million years for the gradual folding caused by the movement of tectonic plates to allow these parcels of land to brush up against the clouds. Even the greatest explorers are delighted by the proximity of the village of Chandolin to the Weisshorn summit, a mountain that reaches an altitude of 4,500 metres and rivals Switzerland's highest peak (Mont Rose, 4,634 m).
Gigantic, wild, disproportionate, superb and indomitable, this natural heritage has always fascinated the Swiss men and women who have worked to protect it, trying both to make it accessible and to preserve it with humility, constancy and discretion, all values that are found in Swiss culture, strongly influenced by its relationship with the absolutely extraordinary nature that the Swiss territory offers.
The best way to feel close to this history is to go and meet the mountains by treading the paths blazed by the walkers, explorers, mountaineers and conquerors of yesterday and today. From Chandolin, you can easily reach a number of itineraries that promise to make you feel very small in the face of the awesome power of the rocks forged and raised by time.
